🧁 Details of the Summer Reading Challenge 2023
The kit is launched by mum of two, Alice Hollis, who said, “My boys are aged 6 and 8, and while I’ve planned a summer of fun I still need to work. Like many parents, I am intending to use holiday clubs, but there will be times when I have the boys and just need a precious few moments to essentially get sh*t done!”
The idea for the kit is inspired by rising holiday childcare costs, which are pricing many parents out of the support they need over the summer. According to a BBC report, last summer childcare costs had risen 5% on 2021, with parents shelling out an average £148 per week.
“In previous years I’ve used local holiday clubs to provide childcare for 4 days a week. This year, the prices have risen significantly to the point where it will cost me £90 a day (not including lunch). To use the same provision as in previous years it would cost me £2,160 for the summer. I simply can’t justify that expense.
“To balance the rising cost of holiday clubs, I’ve planned strategic playdates to share the load with fellow struggling parents and you’ll find me at my desk every evening. But I need to be there for my clients every day, which is why I’ve used a little creativity to make new ways to keep my boys entertained, rather than simply rely on more screen time.
“They say raising a child takes a community, so sharing these resources is my small contribution.”
Notes to editor:
- The Summer Reading Challenge is created by The Reading Agency in partnership with local libraries. It challenges primary age children to read up to six library books – either by visiting their local library or taking part online – between 1 July and 15 September. Every child who completes the challenge receives free incentives, including medals and certificates.
