Creating a valuable thought leadership guide to support members.
BCS: The Chartered Institute for IT exists to support IT professionals and raise standards of competence and conduct across the industry. One of the professional body’s initiatives, Computing at School (CAS), has re-envisioned computing education in England. It ensures students are prepared for the digital world by giving teachers the confidence to lead in such a high-paced and constantly evolving space.
To support its community, CAS hosts regular events. With many members including BCS scholars and early career teachers, CAS is acutely aware of the need to consider all aspects of a career in the education sector. Therefore, as well as covering how to plan and deliver an outstanding computing curriculum, teachers’ mental health and wellbeing is prioritised.
CAS initially engaged me to create a guide that would be handed out to attendees at its summer insight day. As well as perform extensive research, I was able to lean on my experiences as a school governor to ensure the information shared was relevant, timely, and relatable. Subsequently, CAS invited me to present the key points of the guide to new teachers at the insight day.
“Alice had previously done some work with a colleague of mine in another area of the business, and I’d heard great things, so when I was looking for some copywriting expertise, I got in touch with her.
“During this project Alice was able to bring in her experience of teacher wellbeing alongside her copywriting skills. She undertook a great amount of research for the project and put together drafts ahead of scheduled deadlines. She adapted the work based on feedback and the finished product is something that will be a valuable resource to our teaching community.
“Alice also agreed to come along to the event in person and introduce the toolkit to our new teachers to shine a spotlight on the importance of mental health and wellbeing with this audience!”
